Ayurveda: Herbs and Spices

Ayurveda is a traditional, holistic approach to medicine that originated in India. The system promotes mental, physical, and spiritual wellness through exercise, diet, and other lifestyle changes.

Ayurvedic herbs and spices play an important part in this holistic approach to health and wellness. They can provide benefits such as:

  • improving vitality
  • purifying and detoxifying the body and blood
  • boosting mental health
  • improving digestion
  • aiding weight loss
  • improving skin tone
  • helping to reduce the side effects of cancer

People may use Ayurvedic herbs internally or externally, depending on the specific herb and its intended purpose.

Some ayurvedic herbs and spices and their benefits, according to Ayurveda, below:

Turmeric - In Ayurveda, Turmeric is prized for it's antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric-dyed textiles can be used as a healing fabric to support wellness and immunity. 

Tulsi - As per Ayurveda, Tulsi is enriched with phytochemicals, is antiviral and anti-bacterial, purifies blood, enhances immunity, promotes longevity and skin health and helps the body adapt to stress.

Neem - In Ayurveda, Neem is known to be anti-bacterial and antiviral and helps purify the blood, enhance appetite, boost digestion and immunity, treat skin disorders and boost hair, teeth and skin health.

Manjistha - As per Ayurveda, Manjistha is  an anti-inflammatory herb that reduces swelling and joint pains, improves blood circulation and keeps kidneys and skin clean. It also aids in blood-related diseases.

Indigo - In Ayurveda, Indigo leaves are considered astringent, antiseptic, emetic, anticancer, antimicrobial, antioxidant, catalytic and stimulant in nature. Indigo also promotes hair quality and growth.

Aloe vera - In Ayurveda, Aloe vera is known to soothe and balance bodily functions, heal and rejuvenate skin, detox the system and has antioxidant and  anti-inflammatory properties that help keep illnesses at bay.

Red Sandalwood - In Ayurveda, Red sandalwood is known to be antibacterial and reduces skin disorders. It also has a cooling effect and is used as a diuretic and is helpful in treating various health conditions.

Vetiver - As per Ayurveda, Vetiver is used to boost immune system, increase heart health, reduce muscle pain,  promote normal metabolism, improve digestion, aid in weight loss and soothe nerves.
